Volunteer Bicycle Mechanic Instruction Program
Program Overview
The Bicycle Rescue Service (BRS) refurbishes donated bikes to provide safe transportation for individuals in need. Every bicycle is restored to strict mechanical and safety standards.
Our volunteer training curriculum includes two mechanic skill levels. Each level builds hands-on skills, mechanical knowledge, and diagnostic confidence.
Triage Mechanic Training
Access donated bikes, identify need repairs, and prepare them for refurbishment.
You’ll Learn to:
✔ Identify major components
✔ Perform detailed assessments
✔ Estimate repair needs and feasibility
Core Skills:
✔ Frame & fork inspection
✔ Wheel trueness & hub checks
✔ Tire inflation & wear check
✔ Brake & gear testing
✔ Chain, pad, and tire wear measurement
✔ Cleaning, lubrication, basic tool use
Tune-Up Mechanic Training
Bring bikes to ridable condition through adjustments and part installation.
You’ll Learn to:
✔ Install & adjust brake pads and cables
✔ Install tires, saddles and grips.
✔ Use specialty tools with confidence
✔ Follow mechanical standards & torque specs
Core Skills:
✔ Derailleur and brake adjustment
✔ Cable installation
✔ Tire/tube replacement
✔ Pedal, saddle, grip installation
✔ Bottom bracket & hub tuning
✔ Chain tool, cable cutter, alignment tool use
