Become immersed in the culture of bicycles over the past 150 years
Tour Description
Travel back in time to when bicycles were King of the Road. The TwoWheelTimeMachine is a curated collection of original bicycles from the past 150 years. Starting from the earliest form of bicycle, the velocipede of 1869 the journey follows the development of the humble bicycle through the high wheel stage of the 1870's, the creation of the safety bicycle in the 1880's, the Golden Age of Cycling in the 1890's and the variety of machines developed in the 1900's. Sixty rare and important machines are on display. Take in the collection through the interpretive signage or hear the stories of the who, what and how from your guide, Gordon Hobbis, a forty year veteran of the bicycle industry and a bicycle history enthusiast. Original pedal powered machines from the Victorian era are rarely seen and even less so in western Canada as the bicycle was a late arrival to the transportation scene on the west coast. The TwoWheelTimeMachine is the only bicycle museum in Western Canada and would be considered a must see for anyone interested in the history of the past 150 years as the bicycle had a major influence on technology, society, fashion and transportation during that time. Amongst the bicycle jewels in the collection, visitors will see various designs from the short lived highwheel safety era, several "courting" cycles and the first bike to break the 100mph barrier. Be sure to get a picture of yourself on a Penny Farthing, or on an Original Tandem Tricycle or in the centre of the nine foot tall Monocycle. The museum is located on a rural property near Whonock Lake in Maple Ridge BC. and is only open by appointment.
